![]() Globally, the 20th century was marked by: (a) two devastating world wars; (b) the Great Depression of the 1930s; (c) the end of vast colonial empires; (d) rapid advances in science and technology, from the first airplane flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina (US) to the landing on the moon; (e) the Cold War between the Western alliance and the Warsaw Pact nations; (f) a sharp rise in living standards in North America, Europe, and Japan; (g) increased concerns about the environment, including loss of forests, shortages of energy and water, the decline in biological diversity, and air pollution; (h) the onset of the AIDS epidemic; and (i) the ultimate emergence of the US as the only world superpower. The planet’s population continues to explode: from 1 billion in 1820, to 2 billion in 1930, 3 billion in 1960, 4 billion in 1974, 5 billion in 1988, and 6 billion in 2000. For the 21st century, the continued exponential growth in science and technology raises both hopes (e.g., advances in medicine) and fears (e.g., development of even more lethal weapons of war). Source: CIA World Factbook (2007) Welcome to Jail4Bush’s World section. Here we will explore how George W. Bush, Inc. has changed the world, from Main Street, USA to Timbuktu. Of course, only a fool would suggest that Bush has made things better either in his own backyard or abroad. Many U.S. citizens are already hailing Bush as the man who ruined America. That’s not an audacious claim, regardless of what yardstick you use—economic, environmental, legal, etc. Nor is it any secret that Bush has made many enemies around the globe. Nations that remain firmly allied with him are nearly limited to the United Kingdom and Israel, though a number of NATO nations remain on Bush’s leash. Of course, Bush is especially reviled by the international Muslim community, especially in the countries he has invaded (Iraq and Afghanistan), threatened to invade (Syria, Iran, etc.) or even given weapons to (e.g. Pakistan). Bush has also infuriated Latin Americans, who have greeted him and his emissaries with vigorous protests across South America. And that’s just Bush’s opening act. He has apparently started a new global arms race, perhaps rekindling the Cold War in the process. In the meantime, Bush’s war against the environment may be even more disastrous. In a nutshell, George W. Bush is widely acclaimed as the worst pResident in U.S. history, and he’s almost certainly the most hated person on the planet today. Not even Bill Gates is as deeply hated as Bush, largely because of Gates’ phony philanthropy. Of course, the fact that Bush and Gates are so closely intertwined doesn’t help either one’s image except among right-wingers. But there’s a silver lining. George W. Bush could prove to be the straw that breaks Corporate America’s back. He has united Latin Americans as no one since Simon Bolivar, with the possible exception of Bush’s arch enemy, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Bush has also fueled socialist movements in Europe. He could easily become the first pResident to lose two, even three, wars, likely paving the way for something that hasn’t been seen for generations: a Middle East ruled by locals.
